Lonza, Inc. Engineering, Design, Project Management for Overflow Storage Tank $2 million
Installation of a reactor in an existing building. Design and construction supervision were primary responsibilities. Installation of reactor took three cranes — one 200 ton, one 300 ton, and a tailing crane — and involved a mid-air transfer. Reactor design during the preceding 18 months was instrumental in the installation.

Addition to existing plant:

  • 10 million dollar capital improvement project.
  • Parallel Design with R&D, Manufacturing, Engineering Design and Construction going on simultaneously.
  • 100 pieces of equipment with over 10,000 feet of welded SS pipe and 5,000 feet of Carbon steel.
  • Addition of floor for installation of a new 12,000 gal reactor inside an existing building that was still in operation.
  • Poured concrete and set pipe bridges starting on August 15 and by September 15 were laying pipe.
  • Original estimated completion date cut by 3 months with the first batch of product made before Christmas.
  • Total Construction time by using our construction managers was 4 months, with total time from receiving the Lab data to Project completion less than 12 months.

Hydrogen Compressors Installation:

  • Installation of 2 new hydrogen compressors next to an existing hydrogen compressor while ensuring plant could stay on-line.
  • Job criteria was to limit down time with our design.
  • A 40 foot pipe bridge was designed and delivered with all piping installed.
  • Compressors purchased as skid units.
  • Tie-ins were designed and located to be completely installed in less than 14 hours.
  • Cooling water lines were live tapped to prevent shutting down other sections of the plant.
  • With our design the project was turned over to production 2 weeks before scheduled completion.

New reactor installation on 3rd floor of existing building:

  • A simple installation except the plant wanted to limit shut down of the main production line for less than 5 days total.
  • The reactor was set by using a mid air transfer; threading it through a 2nd floor opening, and setting it on the 3rd floor.
  • Tank design and installation sequence was coordinated through our lead Construction Manager. Total time for this install was 3 days. Installing it through the roof was estimated at 14 days.
  • M&K design and construction skills saved 11 days of potential down time for the client.

Tank Installation:

  • Installed 24,000 gal flat bottom FRP tank in place of a existing 20,000 gal skirted tank.
  • Job criteria was to limit down time with our design.
  • This job was originally given to another engineering company. When the design was done the other engineering firm said that is would take 4 to 5 days to have the tank installed. This tank stored material that was a main additive for 90 percent of their products which meant a substantial loss of production if it was out of service for five days. M&K was called in to evaluate the design and procedure and informed the client that this could be done in less than 24 hours. M&K was then hired to redesign the Insulation of this tank and the installation procedure. The tank was installed in less than 24 hours.

Contrast Media Expansion:

  • Expansion of a X-ray contrast media plant. Involved design of a new centrifuge,
  • reactor system, and platform support. Involved validation and clean room work.
  • Handling of solvents was critical to the design.

  • Membrane system for the advanced oxidation of a waste stream. It involved
  • operation at high pressure. All phases of design were included.
